Like many of you, I was in the corporate world as Head of HR in a luxury hotel group. I was mostly happy with my colleagues; but many times were frustrated with my job and wanted to leave; but somehow, did not. Why? Because, I guess, I was "comfortable" with the routine, wake up in the morning, go to work, return in the evening; although many times I had to work at home or on weekends at home, still, I know at end of the month, the salary will be in. Hahaha...
I believe many would understand what I mean and resonate with what I was going through. It was a choice, a choice to stay in a job that many times cause frustrations, anger, sleepless night and quarrels at home!
When my employer was badly affected by COVID-19 in 2020, we had to retrenched more than 40% of our workforce; so when I was told by my boss, the President and Group MD, that I was amongst the retrenched, how do you think I felt? Although I was mentally prepared, I was still somewhat disappointed; after-all, I was with the hotel group for 10 years! But somehow, I felt nothing. Why? Because I am not worried about money as I already have a system to make money.” A system that can make profit up, down and side-ways.
In fact, I am thankful that I was on the list (Lol..) otherwise, I would still be there, taking even more jobs; as, you know, most employers do not hire replacement when someone leave. They will pass the jobs to those who are left behind; especially given the pandemic situation and the industry my employer is in!
This is precisely what happened to a recent graduate from my course. I asked him after nearly 2 months after my course; if he had already started trading. His reply was "Not yet"; because many of his colleagues left the company and he has to take on more jobs (sad right?). But the irony is, he attended my course as he felt his job may not be around 2 to 3 years down as the industry he is in is not secure; therefore, wanted to learn to make money on the side to prepare.
I feel sad for him and I really hope he will learn to take care of himself 1st. Afterall, if something happen to an employee, the employer can always find a replacement but you will be left to suffer; and if you have family and children whom you love and are working so hard for, they too will suffer with you.
